Weekly file: mundane to sublime

Ricardo De Lima, "Like weeping characters from different movies projected on the same screen", year: 2014, materials:
Caramelized sugar bricks, 16mm loop, dimensions: Dimensions variable. Courtesy the artist.

Born in Colombia and raised in Venezuela, this artist has been living and working in the Boston area for the last fifteen years.  His work balances between the two worlds of conceptual and aesthetic art.  By taking mundane objects and recreating them using precious or historically significant mediums, the artist presents items such as these sugar bricks to the viewer as sacred objects for an almost religious contemplation.  The objects become not only aesthetically stunning, but also deceptively simple statements about their function, and the complex process that led to their creation.
